14. Saleen S7 Twin Turbo
The name Saleen and American sports cars go hand in hand, and we would be remiss not to include the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo on a list of the best American sports cars. Built by Saleen inc and designed by racing legend Steve Saleen, the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo improved upon the already impressive Saleen S7 which debuted in 2000.
The S7 Twin Turbo married elegant design with the speed and power of American muscle. The S7 Twin Turbo is built with a six-speed manual transmission and twin Garrett turbochargers that provide the S7 Twin Turbo with more than 750 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque. Any way you slice it, the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo is one mean machine.
13. 1967 Pontiac GTO
We may never know if Pontiac intended to make one of the most formidable American sports cars to ever roll out of Pontiac Michigan when they built the 1967 GTO, but we definitely know they were happy with the result.
The 1967 GTO was available in three- and four-speed manual transmissions and included Hurst shifters. Pontiac packed a 400-cid four-barrel V-8 under the hood which, combined with the optional Ram Air system, pumped the GTO with a gut-punching 360 horsepower right out of the box.
